Federal Mask Requirement for Public Transportation

Tuesday, February 2, 2021 FTA announced federal mask requirements for transit systems to mitigate the risk of COVID-19.

The mask requirement is based on President Biden’s Executive Order 13998, issued January 21, 2021. To implement the presidential EO, on Friday, January 29, the CDC issued an order, Requirement for Persons to Wear Masks While on Conveyances and at Transportation Hubs, and on Sunday, January 31, the TSA issued Security Directive 1582/84-21-01.

Requiring masks will protect America’s transit workers and passengers and help control the transmission of COVID-19.

The U.S. Department of Transportation posted Frequently Asked Questions online. The FAQs in the general section and transit section are applicable to FTA grantees.
