Bike riding is gaining momentum in Central Indiana and more bike lanes and paths are opening all the time. Indianapolis residents are turning to their bikes not just for the exercise but as an excellent way to get to work, run errands and attend special events.

Pedestrian trails and pathways, including the popular Monon Trail and the Cultural Trail in downtown Indianapolis, offer Central Indiana residents safe walking routes for exercise, getting to work, to school or connecting with other transit systems.

Indy Bicycling Resources

  • Bicycle Indiana provides a unified statewide voice for bicycling safety and routes.
  • INDYCOG promotes bicycling as a safe and viable means of transportation and recreation in Indianapolis.
  • Indianapolis' pedal-and-park program offers free, secured bike parking a variety of Indianapolis events.
  • Central Indiana Bicycle Association is a non-profit organization devoted to encouraging the use of the bicycle as a means for touring, exercising and commuting. The club sponsors daily rides between March and November, and has rides every month of the year.
  • SustainIndy provides basic information about cycling in the City of Indianapolis. Their FAQ document is very helpful in understanding the bikeways that are popping up all over Indy.
  • The new downtown Indy Bike Hub YMCA offers secure indoor bicycle parking and other amenities, such as showers and clothing lockers, to commuters and other downtown visitors.
  • BikePorts also provide Indianapolis cyclists with a safe, convenient way to store their bikes.
  • Pacers Bike Share is now available in downtown Indianapolis with 25 stations and 250 bikes located along the Indianapolis Cultural Trail and at popular locations within the downtown area.
